$68M+ Investment in 'Squid Game 2' at Risk as Hit Series was Viewed Over 28 Million Times on Unlicensed Sites

Netflix’s “Squid Game 2,” released on December 26, 2024, has encountered significant piracy issues, with reports indicating over 28 million unauthorized views on illegal streaming platforms.

The series, which had a production budget exceeding $68 million, became a sensation in 93 countries within two days of its release. However, its success is now overshadowed by widespread piracy, particularly on platforms like TV Mong and Hoohoo TB. Notably, the finale episode garnered over 28.2 million views on Hoohoo TV alone.

The availability of high-definition versions with multiple subtitle options has facilitated easy and illegal access for international audiences, especially in regions where Netflix is unavailable, such as China. Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women’s University criticized this trend, highlighting the normalization of unauthorized viewing and the lack of remorse among viewers.

In response, the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has taken action by arresting individuals operating large illegal streaming sites. Despite these efforts, new platforms continue to emerge, complicating enforcement, particularly when these sites operate internationally.

Netflix expressed disappointment over the unauthorized distribution of content, emphasizing the extensive creative efforts involved in production. As a member of the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), the company is actively combating piracy to protect its intellectual property.

Experts warn that while “Squid Game 2” captivates global audiences, rampant piracy poses a substantial threat to the show’s profitability and the broader digital content distribution ecosystem.
