Beware of illegal online gambling platforms

The article warns that illegal online gambling platforms often look legitimate and intensify their marketing during financially stressful periods, especially around the festive season. It quotes South Africa’s National Gambling Board saying online gambling is illegal in South Africa except for bets placed through licensed operators, and that many online casino style apps and sites operate unlawfully if they are not licensed locally for permitted betting categories.

It explains why consumers should avoid illegitimate operators: winnings may not be paid reliably, gamblers have little to no legal protection and may forfeit winnings, and participation can expose people to criminal liability such as fines or prosecution. It also stresses that illegal sites undermine the regulated gambling framework and national revenue, and advises the public to check for a valid provincial licence issued by a Provincial Licensing Authority at the point of operation.

The piece also flags problem gambling risks, noting that early intervention helps prevent financial harm, relationship breakdown, and mental health impacts. It lists common warning signs such as overspending, chasing losses, borrowing to gamble, hiding gambling activity, neglecting responsibilities, and using gambling as an escape. It closes with responsible gambling advice and points readers to the South Africa Responsible Gambling Foundation for free confidential support via its 24 hour counselling line and messaging channels.
