FBI Warns of AI-Generated Deepfake Videos Fueling Kidnapping, Extortion Scams

The FBI has issued a warning that criminals are increasingly using AI-generated deepfake photos and videos to fuel “virtual kidnapping” and extortion scams, where victims are contacted with bogus claims that a loved one has been abducted and are pressured to pay a ransom. In these schemes, hackers scrape social media and other publicly available sources for images of potential victims or their relatives, then use generative AI to manufacture convincing “proof-of-life” videos or photos and send them to family members along with threats, often demanding immediate payment to avoid harm. The bureau notes that while no real abduction has occurred, the fabricated media and urgent demands can trick victims into sending funds before they verify the situation. FBI guidance emphasizes vigilance, limiting what personal imagery is shared online, and using prearranged family code words to confirm authenticity prior to reacting.
