Google Pays $30M in YouTube Child Privacy Scandal
Google has agreed to pay $30 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that it illegally collected personal data from children under 13 on YouTube, in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The case concerns U.S. users under 13 who watched YouTube between July 1, 2013, and April 1, 2020—a group that could include up to 45 million individuals. Those eligible will be able to file claims once court procedures are finalized, with compensation amounts dependent on the number of claims filed. This is not the first time Google has faced repercussions over children’s data: in 2019, Google and YouTube paid a $170 million fine for similar COPPA violations.
