Greece Intensifies Fight Against Illegal Online Gambling: 11,000 Sites Blocked

Greek regulators have significantly ramped up enforcement against illegal online gambling, blocking around 11,000 unlicensed gambling websites as part of a major crackdown on an underground market worth up to €1.6 – €1.7 billion annually. Authorities say the surge in illegal domains—about 10,000 new sites registered monthly—makes enforcement a constant battle.

The Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) is pursuing stronger cooperation with the Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission (EETT) to gain faster access to newly registered domains and improve blocking efforts. Officials emphasise the protection of minors and other vulnerable groups in their 2026–2030 strategic plan, citing research that a significant portion of under-18s engage with illegal gambling.

To bolster the fight, the EEEP plans new legislation to expand its enforcement powers—such as the ability to suspend illegal gambling advertising—and strengthen responsible gaming and consumer protections. Cooperation with licensed operators is also seen as key to combating the black market, which undermines both regulated businesses and player safety.

Officials are also reviewing the regulatory framework for land-based casinos and Integrated Tourist Complexes (ITCs), advocating clearer licensing and operational rules to align gambling venues with regional development strategies.
