Grok was finally updated to stop undressing women and children, X Safety says

Ars Technica reports on the backlash to xAI’s Grok after users used its image editing features to generate nonconsensual sexualized imagery, including “undressing” edits of real people, and the growing regulatory response in the United States.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on January 14, 2026 that his office opened an investigation into xAI, citing a surge of reports that Grok was facilitating the creation and spread of nonconsensual sexually explicit material involving women and girls, and alleging that this content was being used for online harassment, including via X.

The coverage also centers on Elon Musk’s public defense of Grok and denials around underage content, while xAI moved to tighten controls by restricting image editing capabilities for users after the controversy escalated.

Separately, reporting describes additional enforcement pressure, including a cease and desist letter from the California AG demanding xAI stop generating and distributing nonconsensual sexual deepfakes, alongside broader international scrutiny and access blocks in some countries.
