IPTV Piracy Booming in Norway Due to Expensive Legal Services

Norway is experiencing a significant surge in unauthorized IPTV use. Recent data from Mediavision shows that 1.25 million Norwegians—or roughly 30% of those aged 15–74—use illegal streaming services monthly. Moreover, 14% of Norwegian households now subscribe to illicit IPTV—marking a 40% increase over the past year  .

This rise in piracy is largely attributed to soaring costs for legal subscriptions. Notably, Viaplay’s sports premium tier costs 749 NOK (~$73) per month in Norway, in sharp contrast to just 235 NOK (~$23) in the Netherlands—less than a third  .

Politicians have weighed in, with Mimir Kristjansson warning: “Football digs its own grave when it costs so much money that ordinary people cannot have a Premier League season subscription.” Agnes Nærland Viljugrein echoed this sentiment, suggesting cost is a major driver of illegal streaming behavior  .

Adding broader perspective, a Mediavision 2025 Nordic piracy study found that over 1.5 million households across Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden are subscribed to illegal IPTV services—a 16% increase since spring 2024  .
