Most Small Business Owners Overestimate Their Ability to Spot AI Scams, Survey Shows

The article covers a Commonwealth Bank survey that found many small business owners are more confident than accurate at spotting AI powered scams. While respondents often believed they could identify deepfake attempts, they correctly identified them only 42 percent of the time on average.

It highlights that only about 41 percent of small businesses were aware of deepfake scams, that most scam attempts came by email, and that just 55 percent had recently verified supplier payment details, leaving room for invoice and payment change fraud.

CommBank recommends a simple routine to reduce risk: stop, check, reject. Pause when something feels off, verify via a trusted contact method outside the original message, and refuse requests that do not add up.
