No pirates please, say the Chinese
In August 2001, China staged a significant public demonstration in Zhuhai to showcase its commitment to combating piracy. The event featured the destruction of 16 million counterfeit CDs, DVDs, and CD-ROMs using 15 industrial-strength wood chippers, accompanied by marching music and extensive media coverage. This spectacle aimed to reassure international trading partners of China’s efforts against rampant product piracy, especially in light of its impending World Trade Organization membership. Despite such high-profile events, concerns persisted about the effectiveness of China’s anti-piracy measures, as counterfeit goods continued to surface regularly.
