Premier League, Astro warn of piracy risks

The Premier League and its Malaysian broadcast partner Astro have launched the 2025 “Boot Out Piracy” campaign, aimed at warning fans about the hidden dangers of illegal streaming.

Malaysian football stars—such as Martin Ødegaard, Amad Diallo, Raúl Jiménez, Dan Burn, and Matty Cash—are involved in outreach urging fans to stream through legal channels.

The campaign highlights that pirate sites often host malware, phishing, scams, and expose users to harmful ads, data theft, and other cybersecurity threats.

In Malaysia, analyses show pirate websites are over 12 times more likely than legitimate sites to expose users to malicious content.

For the 2025/26 season, the Premier League detected ~645,000 illegal live stream infringements and ~900,000 unauthorized match clips; in cooperation with partners, it blocked tens of thousands of domains in the Asia-Pacific region.

Astro states it has taken down 748,000 websites, removed 5,000 infringing links from video platforms, and shuttered 580 Telegram groups having 32.2 million subscribers.

The aim: protect fans, defend copyright, and push audiences toward safe, legal viewing.
